What Is Insurance Eligibility Verification?
Insurance eligibility verification is the process of confirming that a patient has active coverage with a payer on the date of service. It is done before the visit, using the payer's portal, electronic channel or phone line, and the result is recorded in the practice's system. It answers one question first: is this patient covered right now?
What is checked during eligibility verification
- Whether the policy is active on the date of service
- The plan name and type
- The subscriber and the patient's relationship to the subscriber
- Whether the practice is in network for that plan, where the payer shows this
- Whether other coverage may be on file
When to verify
Verify before the visit, ideally when the appointment is booked and again shortly before the date of service. Coverage can change between booking and arrival.
What happens if coverage is inactive
If the patient's coverage is not active, the front desk can contact the patient to update insurance details before the visit. This avoids surprises at check-in.
How it connects to other front-desk work
Eligibility is the first check. Benefit details, such as copays and deductibles, come next. Read eligibility vs benefits verification for the difference, and see our insurance verification service.
Who can do this work
Trained administrative staff can verify eligibility. A remote assistant can do the same inside your approved systems. See how a virtual medical assistant supports insurance verification.

What does eligibility verification confirm?
That a patient has active coverage with a payer on the date of service.

When should eligibility be checked?
Before the visit, and again close to the date of service if time has passed since booking.
